Living in the British countryside often means no access to mains gas, so heating oil has long been the go-to option for many rural homes. But honestly, the recent jump in heating oil prices have been eye-watering and just in the past 2 weeks, costs have shot up to over £1.39 a litre on average or even higher because of the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
We spotted one report saying prices more than doubled in a single week for some areas. With this in mind is it time to ditch your old boiler for a new air source heat pump?
For a typical house burning through 2,000 litres of heating oil a year, that’s easily an extra £1,400–£1,600 having to be found. No wonder people are looking around for another option.
One solution could well be air source heat pumps?
They’ve been around a while, but they’re starting to make real sense for rural homes especially as there are government grants of £7500 available.
How Do These Things Actually Work?
Pretty straightforward, really. They pull heat out of the outside air – even when it’s freezing – and pump it inside to warm the radiators or underfloor heating, plus your hot water. Sounds mad in winter, but modern ones can keep going strong down to -15°C or lower (more than enough to cope with a British winter). They’re electric, sure, but super-efficient: you get 3–4 times more heat out than the electricity you put in. Compare that to an old oil central heating boiler performing maybe 85–90% at best. Big difference.
What You Actually Gain (Beyond Lower Bills…)
First off, the money side. Depending on your house insulation and how you run things, you could knock 20 to 50% off heating costs compared to oil. Some folks say £500–£1,200 saved a year once everything’s properly dialled in. Sure, it takes time to pay back the install, but with oil prices jumping around the numbers look better every month.
Then there’s the planet bit – no more oil tanker deliveries rumbling up your lane, no smelly tank in the garden and emissions drop massively, like 70–80% less CO₂ than oil.
Comfort-wise? It’s night and day for a lot of people. Steady warmth, no cold spots, quieter running and barely any maintenance – just an annual check, same as a boiler really. Systems can last 15 to 20 years easily (if looked after!).
The Grants That Make It Doable
Biggest help right now is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. In England and Wales, you can get £7,500 straight off the install cost for an air source heat pump. Your installer handles the paperwork, you just see it taken off the quote. Government funding is solid for 2025/26 and with £295 million in the pot it’s not likely to run out tomorrow.
One catch: get a proper MCS-certified installer. Certainly don’t go down the DIY route!
What About Solar Panels to Run the Pump in Winter?
Lots of rural people like to add solar to pair with heat pumps – it makes total sense. In a good year, panels might cover 50 – 60% of what the pump uses over twelve months, maybe saving another £300 to £600 depending on your setup and whether you export power back to the grid.
But let’s be real about UK winters:
- Short days
- Grey skies
- Low sun angle
Solar output crashes to 20 – 40% of summer levels from November to February so you won’t be able run the pump exclusively off panels alone during the cold snaps (unless you have a huge array of panels!). You’ll still pull energy from the grid so be smart and go on a cheap nighttime electricity tariff if you can. Batteries can help further by storing daytime power for evenings. The combo works brilliantly overall – summer excess offsets winter grid demands but don’t expect to be able to go fully off-grid in any given January.
Bottom Line – Is It Worth It for You?
If your oil tank’s looking more and more expensive to fill up and you’re tired of volatile price swings of heating oil, then yes, it’s very likely worth it.
Next Steps
Get a free survey from a decent local air source heat pump installer. They’ll tell you if your house suits having one (most do, especially with a bit of insulation top-up), can check the grant eligibility for you and give you a proper quote. With heating oil prices where they are, the switch could lock in more stable costs and give you a warmer, greener home without all the drama.
Certainly worth a look, especially as things can change so fast these days.
